Abbreviations and Meaning

sts Stitches

K Knit (number after it refers to how many stitches to knit)

P Purl (number after it refers to how many stitches to purl)

YFD Yarn Forward Over Needle (make a stitch)

S1 Slip one (slip the next stitch on to the other needle without knitting it.)

K2tog Knit two together (knit next two stitches together as if they were a single stitch (decreasing a stitch)

PSSO Pass slip stitch over next stitch to decrease a stitch

To make the Wash Mitten: (make 1)

Using 4mm needles, cast on 51 stitches
Row 1: Purl to end (wrong side)
Row 2: K2, [YFD, K3, using left needle lift first of the three stitches just knitted over the top of the other two and drop off the needle] repeat to last stitch, K1
Row 3: Purl to end
Row 4: K1, [YFD, K3, using left needle lift first of the three stitches just knitted over the top of the other two and drop off the needle] repeat to last 2 sts, K2
Repeat rows 1 to 4, twice more.
Work 37 rows in stocking stitch, starting with a purl row.

To shape top of mitten:
Row 1: [K1, SL1, K1, PSSO, K20, K2tog] repeat once, K1 (47 sts)
Row 2: Purl to end
Row 3: Knit to end
Row 4: Purl to end
Row 5: [K1, SL1, K1, PSSO, K18, K2tog] repeat once, K1 (43 sts)
Row 6: Purl to end
Row 7: [K1, SL1, K1, PSSO, K16, K2tog] repeat once, K1 (39 sts)
Row 8: Purl to end
Row 9: [K1, SL1, K1, PSSO, K14, K2tog] repeat once, K1 (35 sts)
Cast off in purl.

To make up

Carefully sew around top and sides of wash mitten leaving the bottom open for putting on your hand. Elastic can be threaded through the wrist for a more secure fit. A ribbon bow can be tied in the centre of the wash mitten if desired.

To make the Soap Case: (make 2)

Using 4mm needles, cast on 15 stitches
Row 1: Purl to end (wrong side)
Row 2: Knit to end
Row 3: Purl to end
Row 4: K2, [YFD, K3, using left needle lift first of the three stitches just knitted over the top of the other two and drop off the needle] repeat to last stitch, K1
Row 5: Purl to end
Row 6: K1, [YFD, K3, using left needle lift first of the three stitches just knitted over the top of the other two and drop off the needle] repeat to last 2 sts, K2
Repeat rows 3 to 6, a further 3 times, then rows 2 and 3 once more.
Cast off in purl.

To make up

Carefully sew around edges of soap case leaving a short edge open for adding and removing a bar of soap. Tie a ribbon over the open edge to secure.
