Knitted Dog Capelet

Skill Level: Easy

Size: For medium size dog: measures 18” around neck (buttoned) x 14” long

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn: 300 yds. green (MC), 150 yds. red (Color A), 150 yds. white (Color B)

NOTE: If desired, capelet length/width can be increased (see pattern.) Additional yarn will be needed to achieve a longer/wider capelet.

Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle (20”-24” length) – OR size to achieve gauge

Size 6 (4.0 mm) straight or circular needle (20”-24” length)

Stitch markers

Tapestry needle

½” jingle bell, or button

Optional: Crochet hook size G

Gauge: 17 sts & 24 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 7 needle

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), continue (cont), decrease (dec), each (ea), increase (inc), knit (k), pattern (patt), place marker (pm), purl (p), single crochet (sc), slip (sl), stockinette stitch (st st)

Pattern notes: Capelet is knit from neck down in two-row stripes, with increases at intervals along top side of body and stitches at each side worked in garter stitch border. Neckband/buttonband is worked in opposite direction from first cast-on row.

Special stitches:

M1 (make one) increase: When instructed to increase in pattern, do so by making a backwards loop over thumb and placing this loop onto right needle. Knit into this new stitch when you come to it on the next row.

Capelet

With larger needle and MC, CO 65.

K 8 rows.

Begin stripe pattern and set up border sts (Note: Do not cut colors after every 2 rows but carry strands loosely up sides of work.)

Row 9 (RS): Cont with MC, K5 (border sts), pm, k15, pm, k25, pm, k15, pm, k5 (border sts).

Row 10 (WS): K5 (border sts), sl marker, p15, sl marker, p25, sl marker, p15, sl marker, k5 (border sts).

NOTE: Throughout rest of striped body portion, keep 5 sts ea side in garter st (i.e., knit those 5 sts every row).

Row 11 (RS): Drop MC (do not cut it), join Color A, k5, sl marker, k15, sl marker, k25, sl marker, k15, sl marker, k5.

Row 12 (WS): With Color A, K5, sl marker, p15, sl marker, p25, sl marker, p15, sl marker, k5.

Row 13 (RS): Drop Color A (do not cut it), join Color B, k5, sl marker, k15, sl marker, k25, sl marker, k15, sl marker, k5.

Row 14 (WS): With Color B, k5, sl marker, p15, sl marker, p25, sl marker, p15, sl marker, k5.

Row 15 (RS): Drop Color B, pick up MC, k5, sl marker, k15, sl marker, k25, sl marker, k15, sl marker, k5.

Row 16 (WS): With MC, k5, sl marker, p15, sl marker, p25, sl marker, p15, sl marker, k5.

Cont in stockinette stitch and stripe pattern as established, slipping markers as you come to them. Pick up new color from underneath dropped strands and carry colors loosely up sides of work. Maintain color changes every 2 rows.

Begin increase intervals:

Row 19 (RS)(inc row): K5, sl marker, k to 2 sts before next marker, k1, M1, k1, sl marker, k25, sl marker, k1, M1, k to last marker, sl marker, k5 (67 sts)

Row 20(WS): K5, p across to last 5 sts, k5.

Rows 21-26: Cont even in stripe patt as established (67 sts)

Rep Rows 19-26 until there are a total of 77 sts (5 on border, 21 on side, 25 in center, 21 on side, 5 on border = 77 sts). If necessary work as many extra rows as necessary even so as to end having just finished 2 rows of Color C.

NOTE: At this point, capelet length/width can be increased by continuing to rep Rows 19-26 to desired length. Additional yarn will be needed to achieve a longer/wider capelet.

Lower border:

With MC, k 10 rows, removing markers as you come to them on first row of border. Bind off loosely.

Neckband/Buttonhole:

Hold capelet with foundation cast-on row (i.e., neck edge) at top. With smaller needles and MC, CO 15 sts, pick up and knit one st in ea of the 65 sts along neck edge cast-on row, CO 15 (95 sts)

K 10 rows.

Next row (buttonhole row): K6, BO next 2 sts, k to end.

Next row: K across to where the 2 sts were bound-off on previous row, cast on 2 sts (to replace the 2 that were bound-off), k to end (95 sts.)

K 10 rows. Bind off loosely.

Optional crochet finish:

Row 1: With crochet hook, attach MC at left neck edge of cape (below neckband), ch 1, sc evenly around 3 sides of capelet working over strands of color changes along sides of work.

Ch 1, turn, sc in ea sc around, working 3 sc in ea corner. Join with sl st to beg sc. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Sew jingle bell or button on buttonband.
