To make Back of Hot Water Bottle Cover (make 1):
Using 4mm needles cast on 44 sts
Row 1: [K1, P1] rpt to end of row
Repeat this row a further 5 times (6 rows worked).
Commence pattern
Row 1: Knit to end
Row 2: P4, [ K4, P4 ] repeat to end
Row 3: Knit to end
Row 4: [ K4, P4] rpt to last 4 sts, K4
Repeat these 4 rows of pattern a further 16 times (work 17 times in total)
Work 6 rows in K1, P1 rib
Cast off in rib.
To make Front of Hot Water Bottle Cover (make 1):
Cast on 40 sts. Work 2 rows in K1, P1, rib
Row 3: Rib 5, [cast off 2sts, rib 5 (including st on RH needle)], rpt to end.
Row 4:[ Rib 4, m1 twice into next st] rpt to last 5sts, rib 5.
Work 2 more rows rib.
Cast on 2 sts at beginning of next two rows, worked in rib.
Work a further 4 rows rib.
Commence pattern
Row 1: Knit to end
Row 2: P4, [K4, P4 ] rpt to end
Row 3: Knit to end
Row 4: [K4, P4] rpt to last 4 sts, K4
Continue in pattern until 28 rows less of pattern have been worked than used back.
Commence shaping whilst continuing with pattern and keeping continuity.
Next row: K20, K2tog, turn.
Work 3 rows pattern on these 21 sts
Next row: K19, K2tog
Work 3 rows pattern
Next row K18, K2tog.
Work 3 rows pattern
Continue working thus decreasing every 4th row until the 28 rows have been worked. (i.e. ending with an even row with 15sts on needle).
Commence rib:
Row 1: K1, {P1, K1] rpt to end of row

Repeat these 2 rows twice more.
Cast off in rib.
Mark the horizontal loop lying before the next stitch then rejoin yarn.

Commence rib:
Row 1: K1, [P1, K1] rpt from * to end of row

Repeat these 2 rows twice more.
Cast off in rib.
With right side facing, pick up and knit 26 sts from right front, the marked horizontal loop (leave marked) in the centre and 26 sts from the left front
Row 1(right side facing), [P1, K1] rpt until 2 before marked loop, P2tog, K marked loop, P2tog, [K1,P1] rpt to end
Row 2: [ K1, P1] rpt until 2 before centre loop, K2tog, P centre loop, K2tog, [P1,K1], rpt to end.
Repeat these two rows twice more.
Cast off in rib, purling 2 together either side of the centre loop.
To make Up:
With right sides facing, sew up top (including the V-rib) and the side seams of hot water bottle cover. Turn correct way out. Secure any loose ends.
Sew buttons onto the base of the backto correspond with the buttonholes on the front.
