Knitting gauge: 10 x 10 cm = 17 sts x 22 rows in the main pattern.
Work execution:
Main piece: cast on 56 sts and knit as follows: 1st row (right side): all sts purl; 2nd row: * [1 knit st, 1 purl st, 1 knit st] from the next st, 3 purl sts together *, repeat from * to * to the end of the row; 3rd row: all sts purl; 4th row: * 3 purl sts together, [1 knit st, 1 purl st, 1 knit st] from the next st *, repeat from * to * to the end of the row. These 4 rows form the main pattern.
Continue with the main pattern until the piece measures 29 cm, ending with a 4th row of the main pattern on the right side for the next row. Next row (right side): 1 purl st, 2 purl sts together, [3 purl sts, 2 purl sts together] 10 times, 2 purl sts together, 1 purl st = 44 sts. Then work 4 rows in stockinette stitch, ending on the wrong side for the next row. Bind off all sts in knit on the wrong side. Knit the second main piece the same way.
Side piece: cast on 20 sts. Knit in the main pattern the same as the main piece, until the piece measures 29 cm, ending with a 4th row of the main pattern on the right side for the next row. Next row (right side): 1 purl st, 2 purl sts together, [3 purl sts, 2 purl sts together] 3 times, 2 purl sts = 16 sts. Work 4 rows in stockinette stitch, ending on the wrong side for the next row. Bind off all sts in knit on the wrong side. Knit the second side piece the same way.
Bottom: cast on 16 sts. Knit in garter stitch, starting with a knit row, until the piece measures 25 cm, ending on the right side for the next row. Bind off.
Handles (knit 2): cast on 17 sts and knit as follows: 1st row (right side): 4 knit sts, slip 1 st (= fold line), 7 knit sts, slip 1 st (= other fold line), 4 knit sts; 2nd row: all sts purl. Repeat these 2 rows until the piece measures 36 cm, ending on the right side for the next row. Bind off all sts.
Assembly and finishing:
Cut the lining fabric to the same size as the main pieces, side pieces, and bottom, allowing a few cm for seams. Cut the stuffing or dense fabric to the same size. Attach the stuffing or dense fabric on the wrong side of the lining fabric (= one layer).
Sew the side pieces to the main pieces. Sew the bottom to the cast-on edges of the side and main pieces. Fold the handles along the fold lines and sew them together.
Cut 2 ribbons for the handles and thread through each handle, sew the ends of the handles. Carefully sew the handles to the top of the bag at the center, 8 cm apart from each other. Sew in the lining fabric.
