Gauge: 18 sts x 12 rows = 2 inches in pattern repeat

Pattern Repeat:

*Knit 2 sts, purl 2 sts, repeat from * across.

Notes:

  1. Worked in Rows only.
  2. Button holes are optional, see both options below.
  3. If you want a wider cowl, add more sts to the beginning cast on in multiples of 2.
  4. Adjust the length by adding more rows for a longer cowl, or less rows for a shorter cowl.

INSTRUCTIONS

Multiple 2

Cast on 48

Row 1: *Knit 2 sts, Purl 2 sts, repeat from * across (48 sts).

Rows 2-110: Repeat Row 1 until fabric measures 18 (19,20,21) inches, or fits around your neck (adjust length here).

Option 1- With button holes:

Row 111: Knit 2 sts, Purl 2 sts, Knit 2 sts, *slip 2 sts purlwise, pass slipped st over 1 st, [slip 1 st purlwise, pass slipped st over] 5x, put last st back on left needle, cast on 6 sts on right needle, work pattern repeat for 9 sts*, repeat *-* 1 more time, slip 2 sts purlwise, pass slipped st over 1 st, [slip 1 st purlwise, pass slipped st over] 5x, put last st back on left needle, cast on 6 sts on right needle, work pattern repeat for last 6 sts (3 button holes).

Row 112-114: Repeat Row 1 (work carefully into the 6 cast on sts for each button hole).

Bind off in pattern repeat across. End off yarn, weave in all ends.

Sew buttons to end of cowl, opposite end of button holes.

Option 2-Omit button holes:

Repeat Row 1 until desired length around your neck, then add 1 more inch. Bring both ends together, overlap them by 1 inch. Sew buttons on top, sewing through both layers, placing them evenly apart.
