Knitted Mermaid Blanket

Materials

  • Yarn: Approximately 450-475 yards of super bulky (6) yarn for child size. Approx. 650-700 yards for adult (I used Loops and Threads – Country Loom in Solarium)
  • Knitting Needles: Size 6.0 mm (US 10) Straight and Double Pointed Needles [DPNs] or circular needles (20 or 24”) (or use the magic loop method)
  • Yarn or Tapestry Needle

Gauge

7 sts and 10 rows = 2 inches (5 centimeters) in Stockinette Stitch

Abbreviations

  • M1 (Make 1): On a knit row: Insert left needle, front to back, under the strand between st on left needle and st on right needle making a new loop on left needle. Knit this loop through the back. On a purl row: Insert left needle, back to front, under the strand between st on left needle and st on right needle making a new loop on left needle. Purl this loop through the front.
  • K2tog: Knit two stitches together
  • P2tog: Purl two stitches together
  • **: Repeat the section between the two stars the designated number of times

Fins Pattern (Make 2)

*Fin pattern will remain the same for adult size, but if you’d like to make them just a little larger, you can go up to a size US 11 or US 13 Straight Needle to accomplish that.*

Using straight needles, CO 3 sts with tail color

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: P1, M1, P1, M1, P1 (5 total sts)

Row 3: K1, M1, K3, M1, K1 (7 total sts)

Row 4: P1, M1, P5, M1, P1 (9 total sts)

Row 5: K1, M1, K7, M1, K1 (11 total sts)

Row 6: K1, M1, K9, M1, K1 (13 total sts)

Row 7: P1, M1, P11, M1, P1 (15 total sts)

Row 8: P1, M1, P13, M1, P1 (17 total sts)

Row 9: K1, M1, K15, M1, K1 (19 total sts)

Row 10: P1, M1, P17, M1, P1 (21 total sts)

Row 11: K1, M1, K19, M1, K1 (23 total sts)

Repeat Round 2 until your piece measures approx. 20 inches in length from the cast on edge.
