Knitted Toboggan Hat

Size: Approx. 18” circumference (unstretched) by 14” long – will stretch to fit up to 23” head circumference

Note on size: Because of the stretchiness & extra length of this hat, it can fit a range of ages from older child to teen to adult.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn medium in two colors:

180 yards multicolor, variegated, self-striping, or solid color – Main color (MC)

30 yards solid color – Contrast color (CC)

Sample shown in Red Heart “Super Saver” (100% acrylic)

Size 8 US (5 mm) circular needle (16” length), or size needed to achieve gauge

Set of 4 (or 5) size 8 US (5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns)

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

3 buttons, plus sewing needle & thread

6” piece of cardboard (for tassel)

Gauge: 17 sts & 23 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 8 US (5 mm) needle

Pattern notes:

Hat is worked in the round from lower ribbed edge to crown, with decreases over several rounds forming the pointed top.

Contrast color tassel is attached to point of hat and button embellishments are sewn to front.

Hat

With CC and circular needle, CO 72. Join for circular knitting, being careful that stitches are not twisted. Place marker to note beg of rnds.

Ribbed edge:

Rnds 1-9: *K2, p2, rep from * around.

Rnd 10: K (72 sts)

Hat body:

Join MC, drop & cut CC, leaving 6” tail for weaving in later. K around until piece measures 6” from cast-on edge.

Begin decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular ndl):

Dec rnd 1: *K6, k2tog, rep from * around (63 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Dec rnd 2: *K5, k2tog, rep from * around (54 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Dec rnd 3: *K4, k2tog, rep from * around (45 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Dec rnd 4: *K3, k2tog, rep from * around (36 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Dec rnd 5: *K2, k2tog, rep from * around (27 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Dec rnd 6: *K1, k2tog, rep from * around (18 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Dec rnd 7: *K2tog, rep from * around (9 sts)

K 6 rnds.

Last dec rnd: K1, *k2tog, rep from * around (5 sts)

K 1 rnd.

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail, gather rem sts tog and pull gently to close. Weave in tails.

Tassel:

With CC, wind yarn around 6” piece of cardboard about ten times. With separate length of yarn, tie strands together at one end of wrap, then cut strands at other end. Wrap a separate strand of yarn around top of bundled strands about 1” from top. Attach tassel to top of hat.

Finishing:

Sew three buttons in a vertical line to one front-side of hat as shown.
