Requirements
DK yarn - (8ply) - or any yarn which gives the correct tension
Tension ~ 22stitches = 4" (10cm)
3.25mm and 4mm needles
5 buttons
The Back and Fronts (knitted in one piece to the armholes)
Using 3.25cm needles and main colour, cast on 117sts
Work 10 rows in k1, p1 rib
Change to 4mm needles and add in contrast colour
Work in stocking stitch - one row knit, one row purl in contrast colour then one row knit, one row purl in main colour for 28 rows
Continue with this sequence of stripes (throughout)
Shape armholes
Knit 1 row
Purl 25sts, cast off 6sts purlwise, p54sts, cast off 6sts purlwise, p24sts
Continue on first front only ~
Next Row: Knit to last 3sts, k2tog, k1
Next Row: Purl
Repeat the last 2 rows until 15sts remain, ending after working a purl row
Cut off both yarns
Slip first 4sts onto a safety pin for the neckband
Rejoin yarn to remaining 11sts
Next Row: Knit to last 3sts, k2tog, k1
Next Row: Purl to last 2sts, p2tog
Next Row: K2tog, k to last 3sts, k2tog, k1

Change to 4mm needles and add in contrast colour
Work in stocking stitch - one row knit, one row purl in contrast colour then one row knit, one row purl in main colour – increasing one stitch at each end of 3rd and every following 4th row until 46sts
Continue in stripe sequence ~
Work straight (no further increases) until 33 rows of stocking stitch have been worked
Cast off 3sts purl to last 3 sts, cast off 3sts
Cut off both yarns, and rejoin to remaining 40sts
Next Row: K1, s1, k1, psso, work to last 3sts, k2tog, k1
Next Row: Purl
Repeat the last 2 rows until 8sts remain
Slip these 8sts onto a stitch holder for the neckband
Cut off both yarns
The Buttonhole Band
Using 3.25cm needles and main colour, cast on 7sts
Work 64 rows in k1, p1 rib, making a buttonhole on the 3rd and every following 16th row (that is the 3rd, 19th, 35th and 51st rows)
Leave the stitches on a safety pin for the neckband.
Cut off yarn
The Button Band
Using 3.25cm needles and main colour, cast on 7sts
Work 64 rows in k1, p1 rib. Do not cut off yarn
The Neckband
Rib across the 7sts from the button band, knit across the 4sts on a safety pin from the front neck, pick up and knit 10sts from the front slope edge, knit across the 8sts from one sleeve top, 23sts from the back, and 8sts from second sleeve top, pick up and knit 10sts down front edge, 4sts on a safety pin at the front neck, then rib across the 7sts of the buttonhole band. (81sts)
Rib across the row, making a buttonhole as before (above the others made on the buttonhole band)
Work 3 rows in rib.
Cast off in rib.
Join the sleeve seams, and join the sleeves to the back and fronts.
Join the button and buttonhole bands to the fronts.
Sew on buttons.
If you want a smaller baby cardigan, you can follow the instructions above and use 4ply yarn and 3.25mm needles
