Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), decrease (dec), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), place marker (pm), purl (P), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), slip (sl), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)

Pattern notes:

To maintain vertical orientation of eyelet pattern when worn, scarf is worked in two sections from ends to center back neck, then joined with 3-needle bind-off technique.

Each eyelet block is separated by garter stitch rows. Do not cut Color A until instructed to do so. Instead, carry it loosely up the sides when working Color B rows (join, cut and rejoin Color B as instructed in pattern.)

Three stitches at beginning and end of each row are kept in garter stitch for borders. If desired, markers can be placed as instructed in pattern to separate border stitches from rest of pattern.

When instructed to slip stitches, slip them purl wise.

Scarf

With Color A, cast on 19.

Rows 1-5: K.

Begin eyelet pattern section:

(Note: instructions in () to “place marker (pm)” and “slip marker (sl marker)” are optional, offered as an aid to those who may want to use markers.)

Row 1 (RS): K3, (pm if desired), K5, K3, K5, (pm if desired), K3.

Row 2 (WS): K3, (sl marker), P5, K3, P5, (sl marker), K3.

Row 3 (RS): K3, (sl marker), *K2tog, yo, K1, yo, sl 1, K1, psso, K3, rep from * once, ending last rep with (sl marker), K3.

Row 4 (WS): K3, (sl marker), P5, K3, P5, (sl marker), K3.

Rows 5-20: Rep Rows 1-4 (if using markers, slip them every row throughout scarf.)

Begin garter stitch section:

Rows 1-2: Continuing with Color A, K across. At end of Row 2, do not cut Color A, but carry it loosely up side of work.

Rows 3-6: Join Color B (leaving 6” tail for weaving in later) and K 4 rows. At end of Row 6, drop Color B and pick up Color A (after next row is completed, Color B can be cut, leaving 6” tail for weaving in later.)

Rows 7-8: With Color A, K across.

One block is completed.

Repeat Rows 1-20 of eyelet pattern section and Rows 1-6 of garter stitch section alternately, until a total of 6 blocks have been completed, ending last block as follows:

Garter stitch section:

Rows 1-2: With Color A, K across. Cut Color A (leaving 6” tail for weaving in later.)

Row 3: Join Color B and K 1 row. Place sts on holder. Leaving a 48” tail for 3-needle bind-off row, cut Color B. Set piece aside.

Make second half of scarf same as first half.

Joining center back neck:

Place sts from holders onto 2 needles. With right sides of pieces facing each other, hold the 2 needles together with both needle tips pointing to the right. Work 3-needle bind-off as follows:

With third (extra) needle, knit first st on front needle together with first st on back needle. Leave this new st on the extra needle. Knit second st on front needle together with second st on back needle. You now have 2 sts on the extra needle. Pull first st on extra needle over second st and drop it off the needle (one st bound-off). Repeat by knitting next sts on front & back needles together, then binding off one-by-one across row until one st remains. Cut yarn and pull through last loop to lock sts.

Weave in all tails. Lightly block scarf if necessary.
