Finished Size

About 3 1/2" (9 cm) wide and 18" (45.5 cm) head circumference, buttoned.

Yarn Fingering weight (#1 Super Fine).

Shown here: Baah! LaJolla (100% merino; 400 yd [366 m]/100 g): Raspberry Toffee, 1 skein (enough for 5 to 6 headbands).

Needles

Size U.S. 4 (3.5 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions

Tapestry needle; one 3/4" (2 cm) button.

Gauge 23 sts and 36 rows = 4" (10 cm) in zigzag lace patt.

Note

Instead of working the button and buttonhole tabs at each end, you can work the lace section alone until it's long enough to be tied as a headscarf.

Stitch Guide

Zigzag Lace (even number of sts)

Set-up row: (WS) Sl 1, k2, purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Rows 1, 3, and 5: (RS) Sl 1, k2, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Even-numbered Rows 2-10: (WS) Sl 1, k2, purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Rows 7, 9, and 11: Sl 1, k2, *ssk, yo; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Row 12: Rep Row 2.

Rep Rows 1-12 for patt; do not rep the set-up row.

Ribbing (odd number of sts)

Row 1: (WS) Sl 1, purl to end. Row 2: (RS) Sl 1, *p1, k1; rep from *. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for patt.

Headband

CO 20 sts. Work zigzag lace (see Stitch Guide) until piece measures 16 1/2" (42 cm) from CO, ending with a WS row. BO all sts.

Finishing

Block headband to about 3 1/2" (9 cm) wide and 16 1/2" (42 cm) long.

Button Tab

Using the illustration below as a guide, fold one short end of the headband into pleats—pleated end measures about 3/4" to 1" (2 to 2.5 cm) wide. With RS facing, pick up and knit 7 sts across the pleated end, picking up through all layers of the folded pleats. Work in ribbing patt (see Stitch Guide) until tab measures 2" (5 cm) from pick-up row when stretched. BO all sts.

Buttonhole Tab

Fold the other short end into pleats according to illustration. With RS facing, pick up and knit 7 sts across the pleated end as for button tab. Work in ribbing patt until tab measures 1" (2.5 cm) from pick-up row when stretched, ending with a WS row. Buttonhole row: (RS) Work 2 sts in patt, work a 3-st one-row buttonhole (see Glossary), k2. Cont in rib patt for 1/2" (1.3 cm) more. BO all sts. Sew button to button tab so that, when buttoned, the headband fits snuggly around the head. Weave in loose ends.
