Materials

  • 6.5mm and 8mm circular knitting needles. I use this cheap set of circular needles. If you don’t have circular needles of the right size, you can also use double-pointed needles. The pattern is made in 4 equal parts on purpose. If you’re confused about all these types of needles, you should read this guide.
  • I used the grey and red Royal yarn from Zeeman. To get a thicker yarn that would work up faster (one evening target, remember?) I knitted this hat using 2 different threads of yarn at the same time. You need half a skein of each. I have used the same technique in His Scarf pattern which you can see more clearly as I used 2 different colors.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thickness and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.

Abbreviations

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • st = stitch
  • k2tog = knit 2 stitches together

Knit Beanie Size

You can easily adapt the size by adding or removing a multiple of 4 stitches.

Gauge is not imporant for this pattern.

The Actual Free Hat Knitting Pattern

  • On 6.5mm circular needles, cast on 64 stitches in the red color yarn. Use 2 threads of yarn at the same time for this beanie.

K1, p1 around for 15 cm.

  • Switch to 8mm circular needles and the grey color yarn (2 threads of yarn). Knit for 10cm.
  • We will now start the decreases to form the hat shape.
    *k14, k2tog* repeat 4 times <60 st>
    *k13, k2tog* repeat 4 times <56 st>
    *k12, k2tog* repeat 4 times <52 st>
  • Switch back to the red color yarn and keep decreasing.
    *k4, k2tog, k5, k2tog* repeat 4 times <44 st>
    *k3, k2tog, k4, k2tog* repeat 4 times <36 st>
    Knit 1 round without decreasing
    *k2, k2tog, k3, k2tog* repeat 4 times <28 st>
  • With a tapestry needle, pull through all the remaining stitches. Pull tight and weave in the ends.
  • Using the red and grey yarn make a pompom. Sew the pompom on the top of the hat. Of course, the pompom is optional and the hat is great without it too.
