Skill level: Easy
Size: approx. 44" wide x 50“ long (after blocking)
Note: Afghan can be made longer by adding more color stripes but additional yarn quantities will be needed.
Materials:
- Worsted wt. yarn:
- Two skeins (approx. 200 yds. per skein) main color (MC) for border
- Approx. 90 yds. each of 9 assorted colors (CC) for stripes
- Sample afghan shown in assorted colors of Red Heart “Super Saver” (100% acrylic, approx. 160 yds/146 m per 3 oz/85g skein) in black (border) and various shades of blue, green, gray, mauve and purple (color stripes)
- 29” length circular knitting needle size 10.5 (6.5 mm), or size needed to achieve gauge
- Row counter (optional)
- Tapestry needle
Gauge: 14 sts & 20 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch on size 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles
One color stripe = approx. 5” high
Stitches/Terms: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (k), knit 2 together (k2tog), pass slipped stitch over (psso), pattern (patt), purl (p), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), slip (sl), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)
Pattern notes:
Afghan is worked in one piece from lower edge to top.
Nine stitches at each edge are maintained in seed stitch in MC for self-border throughout.
Color stripes consist of 24 rows of an alternating lace pattern. Colors are changed every 24 rows. After changing to new CC color, cut old CC color, leaving 6” tail for weaving in later.
Work with separate balls of yarn for each color section across row. Be sure to drop old color over new color and pick up new color from under dropped strand to avoid holes in work.
A row counter is useful for keeping track of rows in pattern.
Special stitches:
Seed stitch (on an uneven number of sts):
Row 1: *K1, p1, rep from * across to last st, k1.
Row 2 and all remaining rows: Knit the purl sts and purl the knit stitches as they face you.
Notes on lace stitch pattern: The stitch pattern consists of an 8-row repeat which offsets every 8 rows. Because each color stripe takes 24 rows to complete, alternate stripes will follow different row sequences.
Lace Pattern I:
