Size: Approximately 5.5” wide x 60” long


Materials:

Worsted weight acrylic, wool, acrylic-blend, wool-blend, or yarn of choice:

170 yds. each of 2 colors:

Sample shown in Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (100% acrylic, 170 yds/156m per 3.5 oz/100 g ball) in colors Kelly Green and Poodle Pink

Pair of size 10 (6 mm) knitting needles

Spare size 10 (6 mm) knitting needle (for 3-needle bind off)

Two stitch markers (optional)

Tapestry needle


Gauge: 14 sts & 28 rows = 4”/10 cm in garter stitch on size 10 (6 mm) needles


Pattern notes:

Scarf is made in two pieces worked from ends to center back neck. Pieces are joined with 3-needle bind off.

For borders, five stitches at each edge are maintained in garter stitch throughout.


Special stitches:

3-needle bind off: Place sts of ea half on separate needles. Hold pieces with right sides tog and needle tips facing in same direction (i.e., pointing to the right). With spare knitting needle, bind off as normal, knitting through one st from front ndl and one st from back ndl at same time.

Scarf

First half:

With first color, CO 21.

Rows 1-6: K.

Begin openwork pattern (Note: 5 sts at ea edge are maintained in garter st throughout. If desired, place st markers to denote these border sts, and sl markers every row):

Row 7 (RS): K 5 (border sts), k11, k5 (border sts).

Row 8 (WS): K 5 (border sts), p 11, k 5 (border sts).

Row 9 (patt row): K4, *k1, yo, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo, rep from * to last 5 sts, k 5.

Row 10: K 5 (border sts), k11, k 5 (border sts).

Rep Rows 7-10 until first half of scarf measures approx. 30”, ending with Row 10.

Place sts on holder and set piece aside.

Second half:

With second color, CO 21.

Rep instructions for first half of scarf.

Joining:

With either color, use 3-needle bind off technique (see Special Stitches above) to join halves together at center back neck. When bind off is complete, cut yarn and weave in all tails.

Finishing:

If necessary, gently wash and block scarf.
