Materials:
Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn, or worsted weight yarn of choice in two colors:
400 yds. Color A (ombre)
600 yds. Color B (solid)
(Sample shown in Pisgah Yarn & Dyeing Co., Inc. “Peaches & Crème” Article 930 4 Ply Worsted in Color #64 Olive (solid) and #229 Juanita Rose (ombre). Cones are 14 oz and contain approximately 688 yds., 2.5 oz balls contain approximately 122 yds., 2 oz balls contain approximately 98 yds.)
Size 8 (5 mm) circular needle (29” length), or size needed to achieve gauge
Size G/6 (4.25 mm) crochet hook (for flowers)

Gauge: 14 sts = 4" in garter stitch on size 8 (5 mm) needle
19 rows = 4” in drop-stitch pattern on size 8 (5 mm) needle)

Pattern notes:
Shawl is worked using the slide-stitches-to-the-right technique. Circular needle is necessary to allow for this maneuver.
Follow directions for sliding stitches and turning work so that correct color strand will be available at the beginning of the next row.
Do not cut colors, but drop and pick up (from under dropped strand) as instructed, stranding unused color loosely up side of work.
Shawl will have a different appearance on each side of fabric, but can be considered reversible.
A row counter is useful for keeping track of rows in the pattern.
Special stitches:
Basic drop-stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS): K, wrapping yarn twice around needle in each stitch.
Row 2 (WS): K, dropping extra loops created on previous row.
Row 3 (RS): K.
Row 4 (WS): K.
Shawl
With circular needle and Color A, CO 40.
Preparation rows:
Row 1: With Color A, k across, turn. Drop Color A but do not cut it, attach Color B.
Row 2: With Color B, k across, do not turn. Drop Color B, slide sts to right end of needle, pick up Color A.
Row 3: With Color A, k across, turn. Drop Color A, pick up Color B.
NOTE: Due to the slide technique, from this point on you will be working two right side (RS) rows followed by two wrong side (WS) rows.
Row 4 (RS): With Color B, k across, wrapping yarn twice around needle in ea st, do not turn. Drop Color B, slide sts to right end of needle, pick up Color A.
Row 5 (RS): With Color A, k across, dropping extra loops created on previous row, turn. Drop Color A, pick up Color B.
Row 6 (WS): With Color B, k across, do not turn. Drop Color B, slide sts to right end of needle, pick up Color A.
Row 7 (WS): With Color A, k across, turn. Drop Color A, pick up Color B.
Rep Rows 4-7 until piece measures approx. 62” or a few inches less than desired length. (Note: piece will stretch lengthwise when worn due to drop-stitch pattern.)
Last row: With Color A, bind off loosely. Cut Colors A & B. Weave in tails.
Flower trim:
Flowers (make 10):
Rnd 1: With crochet hook and Color A, ch 4, join into ring (or use disappearing loop method: wind yarn around finger once or twice, insert hook into center of stranded ring and pull loop through, ch 1, work first round of stitches encasing strands of ring, pull yarn tail to close center.)
Ch 1, work 10 sc in ring, join with sl st, do not turn (10 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc, 5 dc in next sc, *sc in next sc, 5 dc in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st and fasten off (5 petals). Cut yarn, leaving 12” strand for sewing.
Finishing:
Sew 5 flowers evenly spaced across each end of shawl.
If necessary, lightly block shawl following care instructions on yarn label.
Variations:
Try using two different shades of solid colors.
Try using two contrasting variegated colors (one light, one dark).
For a narrow scarf, cast on only 20 sts and follow pattern as written.
