Knitted Little Bag

Materials:
100 yds. DK, worsted or chunky weight yarn (thinner yarns can be worked double-strand)*

Size 8 (5 mm) needles (for worsted wt) or size 10 (6 mm) needles (for chunky wt)
Size H (5 mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, sewing needle, thread, one button
Gauge: 4 sts & 7 rows = 1" in garter stitch on size 8 needles
Stitches/Terms: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), chain (ch), knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), repeat (rep), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st), together (tog)
Bag
With size 8 needles (for worsted wt yarn) or size 10 needles (for chunky yarn), cast on 16 sts. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 56 rows, or until piece measures approx 8" from beg.
Begin flap:
Row 1 (dec row): K2tog, knit across to last 2 sts, k2tog (14).
Rows 2-7 (dec rows): Rep Row 1. At end of Row 7, 2 sts remain.
Row 8 (dec row): K2tog, place remaining loop on crochet hook.
Button loop: With crochet hook, ch 7, sl st back into base of chain, fasten off and weave in ends.
Bag assembly: Fold cast-on row of bag up to 1" below where flap decreases begin. With tapestry needle and 16” length of yarn, whipstitch sides of bag together. Weave in ends.
Chain strap: (Note: If yarn is thick enough, work with single strand. If using thinner yarn, work with yarn doubled for sturdier strap.)
With crochet hook, attach yarn to one side of bag where flap folds over front. Ch 200, attach to other side of bag opposite beg of chain strap. Fasten off and secure ends.
Finishing: Fold flap over front of bag to find placement of button. Sew on button and fasten button loop over it.
VARIATION: On bag body, knit in garter st for 10 rows, knit in stockinette st for 10 rows, knit in garter st for 10 rows, knit in stockinette st for 10 rows, knit in garter st for 16 rows.
