Size: Fits average woman’s hand - approx. 5” long

Materials

Soft worsted wt. yarn - 150 yds. main color (MC) ; 20 yds. contrast color (CC)

(sample shown in Caron Simply Soft – tan & hot pink)

Set of 4 (or 5) size 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles

Stitch markers

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4 sts = 1” in stockinette st on size 8 needle

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (k), purl (p), repeat (rep), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)

Pattern notes: When directed to slip a stitch, slip it purlwise.

Special stitches:

Make one (M1) increase: Make a backwards loop over thumb and place the loop on right-hand needle. Knit into this new stitch when you come to it on the next round.

Wrister (make 2)

With CC, cast on 28 LOOSELY.

Rnds 1-3: Knit. At end of Rnd 3, join MC, cut CC, leaving 6” tail.

Rnd 4: Knit.

Begin lace pattern:

Rnd 5: *K2tog, yo, K1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, P2, rep from * around.

Rnd 6: *K5, P2, rep from * around.

Rep Rnds 5 & 6 until piece measures 5” from beginning.

Next rnd: Knit. Join CC, cut MC, leaving 6” tail.

Next 2 rnds: Knit.

Last rnd: Bind off LOOSELY. Cut yarn & weave in tails.

Optional Thumb version:

On 6th rnd, pattern over 5 sts, p 1, pm, M1, pm, p1, cont in patt around.

Next rnd: Pattern over 5 sts, p1, sl marker, M1, K1, M1, sl marker, p1, cont in patt around.

Next rnd: Work in patt as established, knitting into M1 sts & slipping markers as needed.

Next rnd: Pattern over 5 sts, p1, sl marker, M1, K3, M1, sl marker, p1, continue in patt.

Next rnd, work in patt as est, knitting into M1 sts & slipping markers as needed.

Rep last 2 rnds, increasing one st inside markers as established, until there are 11 sts on thumb. Place these 11 sts on a thread holder.

Next rnd:

Work in patt as established over 5 sts, CO 2 (over gap left by sts on holder), cont in patt as established.

Hand: Continue in pattern until wrister measures 5” from beg. Finish as above.

Thumb: Place sts on holder and the 2 CO sts onto 3 dpn, knit around for 3 rnds. Attach CC, K2 rnds, BO loosely. Cut yarn and weave in all tails.
