Instructions:

Size: Head circumference 54–56 cm, hat height 22 cm.

Garter Stitch: Alternate 1 round of knit stitches and 1 round of purl stitches.

Note: Use the yarn doubled.

Braided Pattern: The number of stitches is a multiple of 15. Knit according to the chart. The numbers on the right indicate the rounds of the pattern. In the unmarked intermediate rounds, knit all stitches. The width repeat = 15 stitches between the arrows, repeat 12 times. For clarity, 3 repeats are shown in the chart to better illustrate the decreases. In the 2nd round, increase 1 stitch after each stitch according to the chart, doubling the stitches. Starting from the 47th round, decreases for the top of the hat are shown. In the 47th round, decrease 5 stitches in each repeat (60 stitches in total). In the 53rd round, decrease 5 stitches in each repeat (60 stitches in total). In the 55th round, decrease 5 stitches over 3 repeats (20 stitches in total). In the 56th round, knit 2 stitches together consecutively. Knit rounds 1 to 56 once in height.

Knitting Gauge: 34.5 stitches and 27 rows of braided pattern with size 5 needles, using doubled yarn = 10 × 10 cm.

Hat Knitting Description

The hat is knitted from the bottom up. Using size 4.5 double-pointed needles and doubled yarn, cast on 90 stitches. Evenly distribute them on 4 needles (2 × 22 stitches and 2 × 23 stitches on each needle), join to knit in the round. Mark the beginning of the round.

For the brim, knit 3 cm = 12 rounds in garter stitch. Then switch to size 5 needles and start the braided pattern, increasing 90 stitches in the 2nd round according to the chart = 180 stitches or 12 repeats in the round.

After 17 cm = 46 rounds from the end of the brim, begin the decreases for the top of the hat according to the pattern. After the 47th round, there will be 120 stitches remaining on the needles (60 stitches decreased = 5 stitches in each of the 12 repeats). After the 53rd round, there will be 60 stitches remaining. After the 55th round, there will be only 40 stitches remaining. In the 56th round, knit 2 stitches together consecutively = 20 stitches.

Assembly: Pull the remaining 20 stitches together with both working yarns. Secure the yarns firmly on the wrong side.

Snood Knitting Instructions

Using size 4.5 double-pointed needles and doubled yarn, cast on 92 stitches. This includes 90 stitches for the pattern and 2 edge stitches. Now knit according to the chart, knitting all edge stitches. At a height of 50 (60) cm, bind off the stitches and join the snood into a loop.
